Founder Story
Welcome to the world of Slowe.
I'm Melanie, the founder and everything else behind this independent experimental fashion studio.
I started Slowe in early 2025 with a mission to create unique one-of-a-kind pieces from pre-existing materials, giving new life to what already exists.
Working with pre-existing materials comes with its own challenges— limited fabric quantities, stains, damage, and the process of deconstructing existing garments. But these challenges become opportunities for creative experimentation, where imperfections are embraced and textiles are reimagined into something entirely new.
To me, fashion is a silent language of self expression, a way of showing up in this world and being seen for who you are.
Growing up, I struggled with self confidence. For a long time I listened to what people told me I should be, chasing dreams that weren't really mine.
Since I was young I always loved op shopping, the thrill of digging for something that no one else had. When I looked at secondhand clothing I saw its potential and how I could make it me. Something I always noticed, was the confidence I felt when I was dressed in a way that reflected who I really was.
In 2020, after a life-changing period, I decided to study Fashion Design at TAFE. It was there that I learned about the true impact of the fashion industry: the pollution it creates, the waste sent to landfill, and the human cost behind fast fashion.
At first, I questioned whether I wanted to be a part of the industry at all. But I realised that fashion will continue to exist whether I'm part of it or not.
So instead of walking away I created Slowe.
As way to be part of the solution—to create meaningful, one-of-a-kind garments while reducing waste and challenging our overconsumption mindset.
So here I am. Showing up in the world. Bringing my vision to life, one piece at a time.
Yours truly,
Melanie xx
